Favorites In Children's

Here are all of my favorites that you would find in the children's section of the bookstore.  Some are reads that I first read and loved as an adult, and some are books that I've kept close to my heart ever since I was a little kid, and still find wonderful to this day.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud
The Amulet Of Samarkand | The Golem's Eye | Ptolemy's Gate

Sub-Genre: Dystopian Fantasy

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: The storyline is surprisingly rather dark, but it's well-balanced with a considerable amount of sardonic humor, thanks to one of my favorite protagonists, the djinni Bartimaeus!  This series doesn't get a whole lot of attention, but it certainly deserves it!

Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White

Sub-Genre: Literary classic

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: This was a childhood favorite of mine that continues to enchant me to this very day.  My childhood copy of this book is practically falling apart, I read it so much (just goes to show that even a child can tell when a book is well-written).  It's a heartwarming story of love and friendship, and should be read by every kid.

The Chronicles Of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis
The Magician's Nephew | The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe | The Horse And His Boy | Prince Caspian | The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader | The Silver Chair | The Last Battle

Sub-Genre: Classic Fantasy

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: This was my first boxed set when I was a kid, and I'm still nostalgic!  I continue to really enjoy this series, although I feel I loved it more as a child than as an adult.  It's a wonderful and classic story that makes you wish it were real, just so you could meet Aslan and bury your face in his mane.

The Harry Potter Series, by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone | Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets | Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban | Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire | Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix | Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince | Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows | Tales Of Beedle The Bard | Quidditch Through The Ages | Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Sub-Genre: World-building fantasy

Why It's A Favorite: I grew up with this series. It has been a significant part of my life ever since I was 11 years old. This magical world of Harry Potter is so original, and feels so complete and real, that practically everyone who enjoys these books wishes it were truly real, both adults and children alike. The stories are so well-written and intricately woven that I never tire of reading (or listening) to it. I love the characters, the plot, the magic .... heck I love everything about it! They have been my most favorite books ever since I picked the first one up, and they will continue to be my favorite books for as long as I live.

His Dark Materials Trilogy, by Philip Pullman
The Golden Compass | The Subtle Knife | The Amber Spyglass

Sub-Genre: Literary Fantasy

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: Ever read a book as a kid that actually made you think?  This one certainly did!  The concept behind this trilogy is so creative and thought-provoking, and it's wrapped up neatly with good writing and an excellent plot.  It's an excellent story that both adults and children can find interesting.

Holes, by Louis Sachar

Sub-Genre: Contemporary fiction

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: I've always loved the multiple layers in this novel (the title and setting perfectly fits the plot--the story has holes in it, and those holes get filled the more you read).  The themes and symbolism that envelope this book are very well done.  I never get tired of reading it!

The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Sub-Genre: Classic literature

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: This was a favorite when I was a kid, and a favorite when I read it as an adult.  I loved it when I read it in English, and I loved it when I read it in French.  It's a simple story with a surprising amount of depth that even a child will notice it.  A wonderful classic

Favorite Spotlight

The One And Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate

Sub-Genre: Contemporary literature

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: I didn't read this as a kid, but I loved this story as an adult!  It's so sad, yet so lovely.  I keep crying every time I near the end.  Definitely deserves the Newbery Medal!

Favorite Spotlight

Wonder, by R.J. Palacio

Sub-Genre: Contemporary fiction

Goodreads | Audible

Why It's A Favorite: This is another one that makes me cry every time I read it.  It's a story that may be a little difficult to believe as an adult, but provides it's young readers with an important lesson on acceptance and bullying.  All middle-schoolers should read this story for sure!
